I want to work with educators in the field but can seem to find my way in and continue to be stuck in a classroom which I love but I need more in my career. I want to helping adults create these wonderful experiences indoors and outdoors for young children. I also want my focus to be on outdoor play. I think so many programs lack the natural outdoors and may children see outdoors as a play structure.

I need help and direction!! any input??

josh dolan posted an update in the group Ithaca Community Spaces: Dream Play Grow Coalition Manifesto

Who are we? We are a coalition of citizens who want to make our city and the world more playful, more healthy and more abundant. We are passionate about urban agriculture and community gardens. We want to see more natural playscapes and adventure playgrounds available for our children. We would like to see all of these new landscape features knit together with a network of bikable and walkable corridors creating a rich tapestry of options for healthy activity throughout our community.

We are also inspired to engage in our local democracy in order to achieve our goals and bring others along with us. We realize that our local system of government can be confusing and overwhelming, so we will work together with other concerned citizens to understand and navigate that system. We will work with a broad coalition of community members, educational and government institutions, local businesses and special interest groups to redesign our community into an ecological and playful paradise.

What is a playscape? We believe that children should be surrounded by beautiful environments filled with nature, art and love. We believe children deserve amazing, inspiring, incredible places to learn, grow and play. We love helping groups create “outdoor play environments for the soul”. Playscapes are built by the creative energy of the community, and are filled with all the good stuff: hills, pathways, sand and water, sculpture, trees, gardens, music and more - all with a variety of sounds, smells, textures and tastes.

Why urban agriculture and community gardens? The current economic crisis and our industrialized food system have made it difficult, if not impossible for many in our community to access healthy food, which in a community like ours that celebrates our local food system, is a tragedy. Neighborhood based community gardens offer a venue for empowerment and education for those who lack access to healthy food and can serve as an entry point for many who have not been steeped in the local food movement. By addressing basic human needs, we build a foundation of compassion on which other positive changes can be built upon. We seek to create abundant urban agriculture spaces from small market gardens to community orchards so that one day, everyone in our community will take for granted the fact that they have enough healthy food for their families.

Why Markles Flats? A giant blank slate exists in the heart of our community and it has got people talking and dreaming about what it could be. This is Markles Flats. This site is centrally located in the heart of the Northside neighborhood, a neighborhood which currently offers little in the way of commercial, social, agricultural and other amenities. By engaging the surrounding neighborhood, the business community and local designers, we seek to create a hub for the community which addresses aesthetic, social, economic and educational needs and dreams of the community.
